Evaluation of Inherent Damping Introduced by Thyristor Controlled Series Compensators

Series compensation of transmission lines increase the risk Sub-Synchronous Resonance (SSR) problems. Use Thyristor Controlled Compensators (TCSC) in place Fixed Capacitors (FSC) has benefited terms damping SSR. SSR Damping with TCSC can be achieved supplementary controls or through its inherent capability. discrete time models for small signal stability analysis is well established. This paper uses a simplified Dynamic Phasor (DP) model an in-depth evaluation capability analysis. Source open loop operation and representation it DP elaborated validated against Electro Magnetic Transient (EMT) simulations. Effect inductive-resistive nature on Induction Generator (IGE) Torsional Interactions (TI) shown assessment. It that network resonant frequency exists only narrow range firing angles thus IGE TI are avoided most part operating range. IEEE first benchmark system studies used to demonstrate TCSC.
